Come to our US fabric swap!

Posted on August 19, 2015 by The Makery | 0 comments

If you're fabric mad you're going to love our free Fabric Swap we're hosting at The Makery in Bath.

The drop-in event is organised by American crafty divas Kelli and TJ, who are visiting our beautiful city in September. They are bringing with them a whole host of fabric stash and would like to meet some like-minded crafty folk for a swap shop!

Fabric Swap's are HUGE in the US so this is a great chance to bundle up some of your unused stash (clean and pressed please) and bring them along to swap with other beautiful bundles that might take your fancy.

We love TJ's beautifully tied Halloween bundle

To take part all you need to do is choose from the following themes, Halloween, Christmas or if you prefer, a general selection. Just bundle them up and tie something round them like ribbon or twine to keep them together.

1. Three fat eighths - Halloween
2. Three fat eighths - Christmas
3. Three fat eighths - Whatever you like!

*NB: A Fat Eighth = 25cm x 55cm

Kelli has her bundles all ready to pack!

Then drop in between 11am - 1pm on the day, bringing your fabrics with you. We'll have some tasty treats for you to munch on whilst chatting craft and swapping your fabrics!

If you are reluctant to part with your stash feel free to purchase some fun new fabrics in The Makery when you come in.

How to make Espadrilles

Posted on June 25, 2015 by The Makery | 5 comments

The world has gone Espadrille crazy! This season the traditional Spanish soft shoe has reached new heights and we're loving it!

Espadrilles are big news this summer with pairs by designers such as Louis Vuitton, Chloé and Fendi, making a whopping £370 and last year Chanel selling out of their interlocking trademark "C" logo with pairs reaching up to £700 on eBay! Not bad for former peasant shoes.

At The Makery we offer how to make espadrilles workshops in our John Lewis, Oxford Street and Bath Makery workshop where we show you how to make your very own pair in your favourite fabric. But don't worry if you can't make it to see us we sell everything you need to make a pair of your own. A pair for every outfit!

Watch our step by step How to make Espadrilles video tutorial.

We hope you enjoy making them. Don't forget to share your finished shoes on our Facebook, Twitter or Instagram and tag them #makerymakes to be in with a chance to win £10 worth of fabric each month - perfect for your next pair!

A Quilt of Memories

Posted on March 06, 2015 by The Makery | 0 comments

Do you recall the colour of your favourite dress? The smell of a childhood blanket? The pattern on the drawing room curtains?

All the fabrics that surround us; in our wardrobes, homes, offices and communities have stories.

WeFabricate is a community art organisation exploring these stories in a project called A Quilt of Memories.

Emily Langdon is a textile artist who makes quilts (and also happens to be one of our amazing tutors here at The Makery). Her most recent quilt is now on display at Bath Central Library. This quilt has a long history - it was first started back in the 1950's by a lady called Su Elliott and contains lots of different fabrics, from many places and people. Emily finished the quilt last year following a commission from Su's daughter - Clare. That's over 60 years since it was first started!

What's so great about Su and Clare's quilt is that it has inspired another one - although this one will look rather different....it will be a quilt of written memories

WeFabricate is looking for contributions to go into this quilt. This could be anything - an idea, a story, a memory - as long as it's inspired by a fabric. For example:

  • An item of clothing your grandfather used to wear.
  • A wigwam that you used to hide away in at the bottom of the garden.
  • A description of a familiar pattern.
  • A memory of the smell of clean bedsheets.
  • Your dislike of how velvet feels against the skin.
  • The dress you can’t believe you wore to your first disco.
  • The collection of flags from your travels abroad.
  • The first fabric you bought at The Makery!

Please share your memories here in the comments, or on the WeFabricate facebook page, or you can send an email direct to emily.langdon1@googlemail.com.

If you'd like to come and visit Emily during her artist residency at Bath Central Library, she'll be in the foyer during opening house from Tuesday 17th to Thursday 19th March. Drop in and learn how to hand-patchwork for free while sharing your fabric memories.

Everyone who provides a memory will be entered into a prize draw to win a patchwork cushion! Good luck!
